We’re honored to spotlight the great work happening in Lisa Sitek’s classroom! Lisa has been teaching physics since 1996 and currently teaches at Burlington High School in VT. Here’s a bit about her journey as a PEER Physics teacher:
"I’ve been teaching high school physics since 1996, with a few years off for graduate school, and for the last five years I’ve taught in a “classroom” without windows, full walls, or a real sink (in an old Macy’s). I am looking forward to moving into our new school for the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
I discovered PEER physics after hearing about it from non-physics colleagues who attended NSTA in 2023. Tired of the old ways: notes, practice problems, lab, repeat– PEER physics intrigued me. Although I’ve been teaching for a while, I still try to grow as a teacher, so I signed up for the 2023 PEER Physics Cohort. The monthly meetings helped me learn the curriculum and since then, I’ve been part of the Research Cohort. I spent the first year trying to understand what it means to do research and in the second year, I have focused on collecting data on student participation during the consensus building process.
My students have formed a physics community where they collaborate, support their ideas with evidence, and challenge each other. One group bonded so much that they referred to themselves as a “physics family” and were sad when we made new groups. PEER physics not only teaches students physics in a way that “makes it stick”, it teaches them how to think, collaborate, and communicate. I’m glad I made the switch to PEER physics and am excited to make sense of and learn from my research. The Research Cohort leaders and community are an invaluable resource and have helped me get excited about teaching again."
